"A Southern vampire novel"--Cover.
Sookie's boyfriend has been very distant-in another state, distant. Now she's off to Mississippi to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead-a little haunt where the vampire elite go to chill out. But when she finally finds Bill-caught in an act of betrayal-she's not sure whether to save him...or sharpen some stakes.

This book has been my favorite in the series so far. In book #3 of the Sookie Stackhouse novels Sookie goes looking for Bill (her vampire boyfriend) in Jackson, Mississippi. Bill has ran off with a former vampire lover and is now in trouble and could be in serious danger. Sookie finds all of this out from Eric (Bill's superior vampire).

A few new characters are introduced in this book (one being Alcide...a werewolf). Alcide helps Sookie on her mission to find Bill...during which feelings develop for both parties on some level. Also, Eric and Sookie get closer in this book! I loved Alcide in the first half of the book, but toward the end he really rubbed me the wrong way!

In this book I fell in love with Eric and disliked Bill more than I did in the first two! I no longer want Sookie to have anything to do with Bill and I hope that something more develops between her and Eric! Her and Eric seem to have this pull to one another that they can't seem to stop. I Can't wait to read Dead to the World next!
I can't stand spoiler reviews.....
Just wanted to get that off my chest.
Bill's in a big heap o'trouble and he's distancing himself (i.e. he's busy working, men do that sometimes...so do self-published authors trying to promote their books, it happens) from Sookie and then suddenly he's gone.
Of course that Viking love god Eric pulls Sookie and her special talent in to help locate Bill.
Enter Alcide.....Alcide and his strange normality.
I want her to be with Alcide but it's too easy and then there's Eric himself.
And that, for me, was the whole point of this book. Not only was a huge chasm opened between Bill and Sookie, but Eric became a 3D character.
Some people think it's ridiculous that every man wants Sookie, but not every man does. Plenty of them don't like her, as evidenced by the end of the book. But there are those women, curse them, that every man wants. Don't hate. It can be hard being that woman, just look at poor Sookie. She's learning how to manage it all now that Bill made her aware of what she was missing. Now the poor thing has to decide if his mad skillz between the sheets (or wherever) make all the trouble (and broken bones) worthwhile. Sookie is figuring herself out now as she steps away from Merlotte's and Bon Temps and she's shocked at the woman lurking within. This is a book of huge personal growth and not just for Sookie, for everyone involved.
Now I am totally perplexed and instead of writing this I should continue with Dead To The World, I'm already on chapter 6.
I really have enjoyed watching HBO's True Blood. The books are so much better. Love the characters. Just bought the next three.
The third Southern vampire mystery I've finished in 3 weeks. I think it's safe to say I'm addicted. These books would be great beach reads...if I had a beach to read them on.
Charlaine Harris is one of those authors who have a very good understanding of her characters, and all their human characteristics. She is also great for creating the feminine perspective, in all its subtlety and the essence of human courting and relationships. That being said, Charlaine puts her considerable talents to bare on this third book in the Southern Vampire Mystery series, Club Dead. The results are, as typical for Charlaine, unpredictable.

***Spoiler Alert***

Charlaine Harris readers will all admit she has a flair for the unpredictable. She has a great fondness for throwing a spanner in the works, and causing havoc and chaos at just the right time. Club Dead is a great example of this.

When Bill becomes estranged from Sookie and ends up kidnapped and missing, what is Sookie to do? Follow advice from Eric and Pam? And what about the 'top secret' Vampire assignment that Bill has been working on? What about Lorena, Bill's old lover, and how does she fit in? What does Sookie do when she's on the rebound and sharing an apartment with a hunky Were? And is Mr. Hob, the proprietor of Club Dead really a goblin with Were burning powers? Will Bubba's mental deficiencies finally catch up with him and expose him for the former celebrity that he secretly is? How much torture can Bill take before he would break? How many life or death fights can Sookie get in and still survive, and how much vamp blood will it take to do so? What is the easiest way to dispose of a body someone shoved into your closet while you were sleeping?

These and a million more questions just like these will keep running through your mind as you read this book, keeping you entertained. The world of Sookie is fleshed out greatly in this series, detailing the vampire hierarchy as well as the world of shifters. In the end it is the relationships that will keep you guessing and sink their hooks in deep. This is truly a multifocal book, with a lot going on, and a lot to occupy your mind. The writing is smooth and succinct, like hearing a friend tell you one of their stories.

It may just be my favorite of the series so far.

Highly recommended.
